Many of us spend at least some time enjoying the pleasures that horses bring during our youth, but as we grow up and other concerns creep into our lives, we end up straying from this much beloved past time. However there is something about horses and horse riding that is so soothing to the soul – something that we desperately seem to be in need of in these difficult economic times we are currently enduring.
On the 24th of October 2008, the winners of the 2008 Scottish Thistle Awards will be announced at a spectacular function being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. The Scottish Thistle Awards is an initiative that was created by VisitScotland to honor business excellence. Over and above recognizing businesses and the quality services they provide, the media brings attention to VisitScotland and the sponsors of the awards, and in so doing, puts the spotlight on the tourism industry in Scotland.
The historic village of Killin sits almost exactly in the center of Scotland, surrounded by the spectacular landscapes of Breadalbane, Scotland’s High Country. Situated in Glasgow, Hampden Park is Scotland’s National Stadium. Primarily used as a football stadium, Hampden is home to the Scottish national football team and the Queen's Park Football Club. The stadium also serves as a venue for music concerts and other major sporting events.

Perhaps the costume designers for the movie, Braveheart, were right after all. The leather pouch draped across a man’s kilt protected more than one’s hip-flask, one’s daily food rations or sprig of thistle for luck. The sporran, now a decorative part of the traditional Scottish dress, once protected the vulnerable area of the body for men.
